Payer-provider dynamics in a value-based world
Provider-payer relationships are complicated. As the industry moves to value-based care and reimbursement models, complex contracting is just one of the areas of friction providers and payers are tussling with. Out of adversity comes innovation, and creative measures are underway to find harmony in a traditionally fractious relationship. This article explores the areas where providers and payers collide, such as contracting and administrative burden, reimbursement and pricing, lack of cost and risk transparency and operational visibility and control. We then look at case studies where organizations are adapting to work better together, including through alliances and partnerships, growing new revenue streams, creative reimbursement models and collaborative national forums.
